Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation Celebrates the Watermelon
When Kings of Egypt passed away, they were buried with watermelon for nourishment in the afterlife. Early explorers used watermelons as canteens as they traveled on their expeditions across the world. And every summer Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation celebrates the watermelon and all of its goodness, with the Watermelon Festival.
On August 11, 2010 residents and staff of CCNR took a break from the heat wave and cooled down with some delicious watermelon, as it held its 8th annual Watermelon Festival. The much anticipated event took place in the fourth floor dining room which was fully adorned with the thirst-quenching fruit. Residents gathered around as Recreation Assistant George Bunnel enlightened the crowd with some watermelon trivia (Do you know what two countries view the watermelon as a highly respectable gift?*)
The excitement lead up to the main event: the annual watermelon eating contest. This year, members from the Summer Chinese Planning Council, Summer Youth Volunteers participated in the contest. While they all brought some fierce competition, it was David Kwok who took home the winning title.
The Watermelon Festival proved to be a refreshing respite, as the festivities came to a close with residents and staff alike enjoying a piece of this favorite summer time snack.
